Welcome to St Joseph's Primary School

Primary Six News

Welcome back to everyone, especially all our new P6s!

This is a very important year for P6 as they will be working really hard to be good role models to their P1 buddies and all the other children .

Our class have worked together to create a set of class aims:

1. Be respectful, don't be rude to others.

2. Be honest, don't tell lies.

3. Don't swing on chairs.

4. Put up your hand to ask or answer a question.

5. Always try your hardest.

6. Don't run inside school.

On Monday the 22nd, eleven P6 pupils were invited to take part in an athletic events day at Meadowbank Stadium.  Aswell as pupils from all across Scotland, there were lots of important people there and our pupils did us proud, dazzling the important visitors with their good sportsmanship and behaviour.

  Language

Reading: Primary 6 will be reading some great books this year. Every Thursday  the children will have the opportunity to change their home reader in the school library. It's very important to do some reading aloud to an adult every evening and to remember your book so you can change it on Thursdays.

Top Tip: If you find a fabulous phrase, jot it down and add it to the Writing Wall at school!

Writing: The children are progressing well with their topic related writing. Lessons are every Tuesday morning , with the children working in trios, to help with planning and assessment of their work. Star Writers get to wear a 'Star Writer' badge for the week. Every child has homework to prepare for Tuesdays lesson and it is really useful to chat with your child about the upcoming writing, this will really get their imaginations flowing.

Spelling: Spelling lessons will be done through our writing programme. The children are respnsible for choosing eight words from their writing to learn each week. Their homework  should come home on a Tuesday ('look, say, trace, cover, write check')and should be returned on Friday. It would be really beneficial if someone at home could test the children on their new words.

  Environmental Studies & Science

Topic: This term, P6 will be learning all about World War 2. This should be a really interesting topic and it would be fantastic if pupils could bring in any war artefacts that might be at home. Here are some useful websites to help with research at home!

www.bbc.co.uk/history/ww2children/ , www.woodlands-junior.kent.sch.uk/Homework/Britain.html , www.historylearningsite.co.uk   and www.historyonthenet.com

Science: Miss Hay will be working with the children on Wednesdays and this term they will be learning all about the Solar System.

Maths

Maths lessons are every Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. The children will receive two pieces of homework per week and each piece should be returned the following day . It would also be great if the children work as hard as they can on perfecting their knowledge of the times tables.

Gym: All children should have their gym kit at school every Monday to Friday. A full gym kit should consist of shorts,a change of T-shirt and it's very important to have a clean pair of plimsolls or trainers to change into, which are especially for gym. Primary 6 pupils could also have an anti-perspirant roll-on for use on gym days.
